About Our Department

Communities across the country, are seeing an increased need in geriatric care. People are living longer than ever before due to advances in healthcare and disease control. Despite advances in medical technology, older adults are still prone to a number of age-related complications often not recognized by even the best primary care providers and general practitioners. Thankfully, LSU’s Section of Geriatric Medicine offers a full range of compassionate, specialized primary care for adults aged 65 and older.

Our preventive care options focus on health maintenance and education, aiming to prevent a myriad of common, chronic conditions. LSU geriatricians work with both patients and their caregivers to simplify stressful medical decisions, manage health problems, and design the most effective treatment plan to improve general well-being and maintain a level of independence.

The prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of health conditions in older adults are as important as the maintenance of their mental and emotional well-being. LSU Geriatric Medicine’s physicians understand that the aging process often takes a psychological toll on individuals. We provide our patients and their caregivers with expert psychological care to cope with aging and its associated limitations and demands.

LSU’s Section of Geriatric Medicine is committed to caring for the aging adult’s mind and body so that he or she may fully enjoy his or her golden years with his or her friends, family, and community.

Geriatric Oncology Services:

In conjunction with LSU’s Oncology Department, LSU’s Department of Geriatric Medicine offers a specialized Geriatric Oncology program for elderly cancer patients. Our multidisciplinary team provides clinical expertise in both geriatric medicine and oncology in order to specifically address the needs of older cancer patients and their families.

The Geriatric Oncology program utilizes the latest research and literature to develop comprehensive assessment tools and provide the patient with the appropriate level of treatment—reducing unnecessary tests and hospital stays. We understand cancer’s emotional toll, and provide support services to both patients and their families.

LSU Geriatric Oncologists aim to improve the quality of life of our patients and their caregivers.

The Geriatric Oncology Program is led by Dr. Thomas Reske, who is board-certified in both Geriatric Medicine and Hematology/Oncology.
